Three Peaks Race at the House of Representatives

    Three Peaks Race
Alistair Douglas, Tuesday, 31 May 2011

I challenge mainland yachties to have a go at this most challenging sailing race in Australia. I commend the volunteers and hope that Tasmania can attract even more competitors in next year's Three Peaks Race.'

The Australian Three Peaks Race has wound up at an unexpected location for a challenge to compete. The challenge has been made in the House of Representatives by Mr Geoff Lyons.

Mr Lyons is the Federal Member for Bass who is an electorate covering North East Tasmania and he has made the following statement to the House on Monday, 23rd May 2011:

'I rise today to bring to the House's attention the Three Peaks Race, a major sporting event on Tasmania's calendar. The Three Peaks Race combines the sporting disciplines of offshore sailing and endurance mountain running along the east coast of Tasmania. The race starts at Easter each year at Beauty Point on the Tamar River near Launceston and finishes in Hobart on the Derwent River. The course includes Mount Strzelecki, Freycinet and Mount Wellington - a gruelling task for runners. It also includes amazing scenery across beautiful and remote Tasmania.

'This event is particularly impressive as it is run by a dedicated group of passionate volunteers. Since the first race was conducted in 1989, the event has grown and now includes international competitors - a credit to the organisers. I challenge mainland yachties to have a go at this most challenging sailing race in Australia. I commend the volunteers and hope that Tasmania can attract even more competitors in next year's Three Peaks Race.'

With a Victorian yacht taking major honours in this year's race it is clear that the local knowledge of Tasmanian endurance runners yachtsmen and women can be beaten. Early indication to race is desirable, as the runners need much longer to prepare than do yacht owners. The early commitment by yacht owners is much appreciated by the many runners who each year seek yachts to join for the race.

The change in rules implemented for last Easter's race that allowed an extra sailor in the team for Main Division entrants, optionally increasing the number from three to four sailors plus the two runners, was greeted by most with enthusiasm. The extra sailor still gives the team a short-handed challenge while making it easier for watch systems and better for the crew when conditions are more challenging.

Expressions of interest for 2012 are open with three confirmed entrants and a number of others who are already indicating their interest for next Easter. Expressions of interest can be lodged on the Three Peaks Race see link below.

    The Russian Connection Part 2

    Osession S2H 2010
Peter Sluce, Tuesday, 31 May 2011

Part two of the story or a inside look, is that the Russian crew shot some footage of the start and some of the later heavy conditions, that now feature on Youtube.

As noted back in December David Allans newly acquired Sydney 38 Obsession was chartered by a group of Russian sailors from St Peters berg for the Sydney to Hobart with PDYC Vice Commodore "Comrade Callum" acting as the owners representative in the race.

They had a good race taking 7th in PHS Division 2 but are in no hurry to relive the first nights racing, with 50 knots over the deck not the most pleasant place to be in a 38 footer.

Part two of the story or a inside look, is that the Russian crew shot some footage of the start and some of the later heavy conditions, that now feature on Youtube.

Take a look at S2H start from on board, at the below links.

Winter Series goes down to the wire

    Osession S2H 2010
Peter Sluce, Monday, 30 May 2011

the tie fell in Allans favour with the three wins earlier in the series, giving Obsesion the series, on a count back.

The 2011 Bokprint Winter series went down to the wire with light conditions on the last days racing making for a unpredictable finish to the final series of the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club Season.

David Shepherds Shaw Contracting reveled in the lighter conditions and took two wins to wind up the series tied on nine points with David Allans Obsesion, but the tie fell in Allans favour with the three wins earlier in the series, giving Obsesion the series, on a count back.

Thanks to Will Swan of the Examiner for use of the great shoot of Pipe Dream in race one of the series, all shoots from the day are available from Stallards at the below link.

Notice to all tender bay holders and members

    PDYC tender pontoon and walkway
Peter Sluce, Monday, 16 May 2011

The tender bay pontoon and walkway will be out of use from Saturday 21 May, till maintennance works are complteted

    Notice to all tender bay holders and members;

The tender bay pontoon and walkway will be out of use from Saturday 21 May, till maintenance works are completed, the PDYC courtesy dinghy will be available for use, but please keep in mind other users and note the time restrictions noted.

We will keep members updated with the progress of works on the Club web page.

As those who use the pontoon will have noticed, the decking has given way in the area of the walkway landing area to do these repairs and other works, we will take the opportunity to lift the pontoon and walkway out to do maintenance on both.

The walkway and pontoon will be refitted once works are completed, with a new shore based support system, donated by Andrew Jones, Project Maintenance Engineering, that will remove our reliance on replacing expensive piles.

We apologise for the short notice, this is driven by the availability of the Confab crane to do the lifting and we thank Ross and Nick Edmunds, for their assistance with the use of their crane.
